Khai’s Top 10 Internet Marketing MUTANT Superstars!

Experts have claimed that what made you what you are today is the result of the influences and inspiration of the 5 people you spend most of your time with.

In other words, you will most likely exhibit the behaviors or the characteristics of those around you.

I’ve compiled a list of Internet marketers whom I:

  • Know personally, and…
  • Have the pleasure of being inspired by them

I want to inspire you as I share with you what we’ve gone through together and what their characteristics remind me of as far as mutant Superheroes (in the comics or movies) are concerned.

This list is my personal preference and I want to do something different by opening a window into my personal and marketing life and that is why I want to talk about people I know personally (I don’t care if you think someone better should be here – this is my opinion and they are here because they inspired me in a personal way)

I’ve expanded my list to 10 – in reverse chronological order.

Number 10

Name: Kang

Internet marketing role: Writer/ Freelancer/ Marketer

Flagship Product: http://kangforhire.com

Blog: http://kangweiang.com

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

Mr. Fantastic – Kang is tall and thin. If you watched the sequel to The Fantastic 4, you will see Mr. Fantastic using his flexible fingers to type very quickly on his PDA.

How I met Kang:

We met at the World Internet Summit. Kang was introduced by Dylan Loh – I’ve only met him twice in person but we keep in touch often on the Internet.

How Kang inspired me:

Kang is an excellent writer. I know this because I write a lot of materials myself and we had worked together on projects before. As a matter of Fact, I knew that this guy is really talented from the first time I read his blog.

If there is only one thing I can say about Kang… it would be that we are both alike in MANY ways.

E.g. When I first started out on the Internet, I was thinking, “How should I brand myself? Should I use my real name or a pet name?” My girlfriend (now wife) suggested that I use the pet name – Kaizen which means ‘continuous improvement’. Since the word ‘Kai’ was in Kaizen.

Somehow, I decided to settle on the name - Khai.

Later on, when I went to Kang’s website, I had a Déjà vu when I saw the name ‘Kaizen’ appear on Kang’s banner. In a way, I was glad I didn’t choose that name because it would cause a lot of confusion.

So how often do you meet two Asians who are – both good at writing and both has their online name starting with K? (Maybe a lot… but it seems like a coincidence to me anyway)

I would highly recommend Kang’s services.

“But Khai, wouldn’t you be sharing your assets with him or competing for the same business?”

To answer that, I believe there is enough wealth to go around it is better to work together as friends and partners rather than competing against each other. Always think in abundance.

Most memorable conversation:

Kang: “Actually i think i have you to thank for my writing success these days.

“You made me realize these prices (premium rates) are possible.

“So I’m charging precisely that kind of prices, and clients are happy with the results too!

“Anyway, Khai i think we should work on something together soon

“And i always thought the two ‘K’s is a pretty cool coincidence.” (yeah… couldn’t have said it better myself, ‘brother’)

Inspiration:

Never sell yourself short. Know the value of your time and your work.

Number 9

Name: Dennis Sim

Internet marketing role: The comment guy

Flagship Product: http://dennissim.com

Blog: http://dennissim.com

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

Clark Kent from Smallville. Remember this scene where this guy asked Clark why he helps people without asking for anything in return? Whenever I think of Dennis, this scene comes to mind.

How I met Dennis:

At the World Internet Summit while sitting around with Gobala Krishnan, Vince Tan, Melvin Ng and Edmund Loh.

What I admire about Dennis:

Dennis is 21 years old and I am amazed at his determination to juggle his Internet marketing business with all the other things he’s doing. He has the ambition much unlike many at his age.

However, what makes Dennis stand out in my mind is the fact that he is willing to go ALL OUT to help others in Internet marketing without asking for anything in return. There was one occasion where Dennis came forward telling me how to improve my blog as far as affiliate marketing was concerned.

He even reviewed my E-book – an unsolicited favor and he even offered to help me redesign my e-covers, promote my e-products and install affiliate cloaking scripts – all without asking for anything in return.

I guess the most important thing to get along with others online or otherwise, is to HELP others with no expectations at all, but you will get your reward in the end.

Most memorable conversation:

Dennis: “can you send me your e-cover? Let me re script the report for you so that you would look better… Just trying my luck to help you :)”

Khai: “hey,. Dude. Don’t worry about it im glad that you are helping me.”

Dennis: “Haha, it’s okay – that’s what friends are for. :)”

Inspiration:

Love people FIRST, money will come by itself. Not the other way.

Number 8

Name: Dee Ferdinand

Internet marketing role: Graphics Marketer

Flagship Product: http://www.maxxbyte.com/

Blog: Sorry, I couldn’t find your blog, Dee…

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

The closest I can think of is Spiderman (Your FRIENDLY neighborhood Spiderman) because of his willingness to help others.

How I met Dee:

At the World Internet Summit during the Warrior’s Forum Pre-WIS meeting.

What I admire about Dee:

Do you know that Dee is a GENIUS at graphics? He can edit your photos at a blazing fast speed! He can extract your portrait onto a white background within minutes (like the premium quality stock photos that you have to pay for).

I haven’t heard of Dee Ferdinand when I went to the warrior’s meeting but when I met him for the first time the thing about him that struck my mind was this guy is one of the FRIENDLIEST guys I have ever met!

I’m not kidding – this guy is not only super friendly, but he is very, VERY humble and helpful (in spite of his genius talents). He even offered to be our official photographer for the Warriors.

Not only that, he even offered to share his resources with you to help you out as a friend and build bridges for you.

You can’t find a guy friendlier than Dee.

Most memorable conversation:

(When I was leaving Singapore and I shook hands with Dee for the last time) – Khai, it’s really a pleasure to meet you in person. I feel bad I can’t afford your rates. (As a compliment to my writing skills)

Inspiration: Humility pays off – never live with your heads in the clouds. People will respect you more.

Number 7

Name: Ladan Lashkari

Internet marketing role: Product Creator & List Builder

Flagship Product: One Day E-book

Blog: http://ladanlashkari.com

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

Wonder Woman – not really about the D.C. character, but I’m sure that whoever reads her story will be inspired by this woman’s iron will of steel.

How I met Ladan:

At the World Internet Summit during the Warrior’s Forum Pre-WIS meeting.

What I admire about Ladan:

If you don’t know who Ladan Lashkari is, you are probably living under a rock because there isn’t anything I can say about Ladan’s story that isn’t already mentioned everywhere on the Internet.

I will just highlight a few facts about her in a nutshell:

English is not her first language, yet she is a darn good copywriter. If she were running a race with other English speaking guys, she would beat all of them hopping on one leg (imagine the disadvantage if you had never spoken English before – becoming a writer would be very difficult, becoming a copywriter is almost impossible).

Yet, she has moved mountains at her age in spite of her other ‘handicaps’ (She’s from Iran – try doing Internet marketing in Iran and you’ll know what I mean).

Not only that, when I was having breakfast with her, she is very soft-spoken in spite of her fame.

There is much you can learn from this woman. Remember that every time you run into struggles in business and you’re tempted to say, “I can’t…” Think of Ladan and you will definitely say, “I can!”

Most memorable conversation:

(Ladan made a video about the WIS on her blog. I noticed that I have lots of footage in the video so I asked her) – “Hi Ladan, Thanks for the video. Woah…I actually got more air time than Mike Filsaime!!” To which Ladan jokingly replied, “Khai, of course you got more air time than Mike Filsaime. Because you are a friend, but he isn’t. :)

Inspiration: Nothing is impossible with perseverance and determination. Those who keep on saying, “I can’t” and give excuses for their lack of accomplishments are losers.

Number 6

Name: Aurelius Tjin

Internet marketing role: Viral marketer and E-zine publisher (also known as the unstoppable marketer)

Flagship Product: http://www.copyandpastegraphics2.com/

Blog: http://aureliustjin.com

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

The Juggernaut – this guy IS unstoppable (there was this video game about Marvel Superheroes – when the Juggernaut appears, he would say, “I’m UNSTOPPABLE”).

How I met Aurelius:

At the World Internet Summit during the Warrior’s Forum Pre-WIS meeting.

What I admire about Aurelius:

I had the pleasure of meeting Aurelius in person as well as having a beer together at one of the ‘famous’ locations in Singapore.

Aurelius is well known as a TAKE ACTION ONLY marketer who gets his hands dirty helping other Internet marketing newbies who are just starting out.

This guy produces products like a machine. I wouldn’t hesitate to open his E-mail newsletters because I know there will always be something free to download and educate myself with.

Both of us were involved in network marketing companies and had to put up with negative forces like unsupportive family members, dropping out of college, reading books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad and getting no results in network marketing.

However, he proved everyone wrong by succeeding in Internet marketing – a triumph which I personally desire.

When I first met him, I though it was very difficult for me to start a conversation with him…

But later on, after working together with him on a project, I found that Aurelius is a very helpful person in spite of his busy schedule.

He wouldn’t hesitate to help me out with my blog, giving me business and offering me good advice. I even bought his product once and he wouldn’t even take my money!

Whenever I felt lazy, I kept on telling myself to take action and do SOMETHING. It has helped me A LOT… otherwise, I would be heading nowhere.

Most memorable conversation:

Aurelius: “Mate, nice work.. I’m impressed!

“Your work’s great…one of the best I’ve seen out of my other writers!” (Thanks for the compliment, Aurelius. it is always a good motivation to be recognized for your most passionate work!)

Inspiration: Never sit on your ass, always get busy doing something all the time! All talk but no action is no different from not doing ANYTHING at all (except that it is a lot less noisier).

Number 5

Name: Melvin Ng

Internet marketing role: Infopreneur

Flagship Product: http://makeyourlivingonline.net/

Blog: http://askmelvinng.com

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

Peter Petreilli – One of the main protagonists of the infamous TV series HEROES. Described as an Empath – the ability to mimic the abilities of other as well as empathize with others. (Melvin’s copycat marketing and his ability to emphatize the needs of others…)

How I met Melvin:

At A&W – an informal Malaysian Internet marketers gathering

What I admire about Melvin:

Melvin was my roommate at WIS – it was a time that we really got to know each other.

Melvin is the guy that most Malaysians go to whenever they need advice on how to make money online as he is always up to date on the latest developments. I see him as a guiding force towards my growth in Internet marketing and as a ‘kind uncle’ – like the uncles in your family where you just wanna hang around with. (But this guy is no old uncle; he is actually very young at heart)

Whenever I talk to Melvin on the phone, he is one of the jokers that I ALWAYS have a good laugh with and I would feel a lot better after talking to him even if I feel down.

But one thing about Melvin that really encouraged me was that he is always willing to help his friends succeed.

When I was new to Internet marketing, he was always around to give me constructive advice on how to build my business and take it to the next level. When I was mucking around doing all the wrong things, he would point me in the right direction. Whether it was about ghostwriting, blogging, list building or just good advice for a friend, he is one marketer I would always count on when I needed encouragement and guidance in life.

I couldn’t find a friend truer than Melvin.

Most memorable conversation:

(I couldn’t remember exactly how he said it, but basically he told me that we would work on things together and grow together as friends.)

Inspiration: The journey to success is not easy. Although it is hard to mix work and friendship at times, the journey is usually more pleasurable when you are not traveling alone.

Number 4

Name: Gobala Krishnan

Internet marketing role: Wordpress expert and niche marketer

Flagship Product: Instant Wordpress Themes & http://chapter-m.com

Blog: http://gobalakrishnan.com

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

I’m not sure which hero suits him, I’ll just take one of the superhero characters in Bollywood movies (from India) played by Shahrukh Khan.

How I met Gobala:

Outside his apartment.

What I admire about Gobala:

Gobala is a national hero in Malaysia. Hailed as the ‘savior’ or ‘liberator’ in our country having unlocked the DA VINCI code of getting money out of Paypal and Clickbank in Malaysia (due to several ‘restrictions’)…

Yet, in spite of his celebrity status, he is a very down to earth guy who is willing to sit down with you and help you with your Internet marketing business.

I am one of his Pay-per-post bloggers on his MLM website – http://networkrevolution.org. I joined his writing force way back in January and I continue to blog for him till this very day.

What was most memorable about my experience was the fact that I was VERY new in Internet marketing and I have NO EXPERIENCE as a blogger. He taught me that writing e-books and blogging are two different things.

I was so poor at blogging and handling technical stuff that he would often come running to help me when I messed up his blog – can you imagine me screwing up his blog so badly that all the sidebars would go MISSING?

Yet in spite of my blunders, he would still provide me guidance on how to handle a blog and write effectively.

The blog which you are reading now is a product of Gobala’s guidance.

I don’t know what’s so special about me that I would enjoy the privilege of getting lots of free products from my Internet marketing friends (yep – one of the quirks of being an Internet marketer… I get lots of free stuff just like daughters of rock starts getting back-stage passes to the biggest rock concerts).

He has given me way too much free access to his best products - more than I can even ask for – especially his $7 Wordpress themes that even though I insisted to pay him for, he still gave me the whole deal and I was overjoyed ;)

Gobala is really an inspiration and I am really glad to know him as a good friend.

Most memorable conversation:

“Khai, you have to be more aggressive and assertive. And don’t pawn your best works away like a cheap whore.”

Inspiration: We must never belittle the value our abilities and realize our true value in the market. Do not confuse timidity with humility. Be humble yet realize your true potential.

Number 3

Name: Vince Tan

Internet marketing role: Internet Marketing Evangelist

Flagship Product: Vince Tan Ready E-books

Blog: http://vincetanblog.com

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

Master Splinter (as Edmund Loh calls him). Do not underestimate this ‘rat’ – Master Splinter is VERY WISE and is a POWERFUL WARRIOR and MENTOR.

How I met Vince:

McDonalds - in Subang Jaya, Malaysia

What I admire about Vince:

Wow, if I were to start talking about Vince, people would think that I am almost idolizing this guy (even though I always make fun of him when I’m talking to him)…

Vince Tan is extremely focused, sharp, knowledgeable, determined, loyal and above all, hardworking.

I have grown to admire Vince for his tenacity when it comes to succeeding in life. It seems as though this guy is IMMUNE TO PAIN.

I had never met a person more driven than Vince Tan. He is a guy who is not afraid to learn, not afraid to change and not afraid to endure pain.

He really is one of the most ferocious marketers I had ever seen.

Yet in spite of his many achievements, he would always be there to help me out even if I was in deep doo-doo.

A few weeks ago, I was spending an ENOURMOUS amount of money on my wedding expenses (at least five figures) and even though it wasn’t pay day for me, he would drive for miles from his home just to deliver my commissions (in cold hard CASH) in an envelope to me in person.

Above all, he has taught me about friendship and loyalty. Whenever Vince needs me to help him out with writing, I would burn the midnight oil for him until everything is complete.

Most memorable conversation:

“Khai, when I was in Secondary four (two grades in high school right before someone goes off to college), I was very clear about what I wanted for my career and I had planned my life all the way until 35. I want to be a millionaire and a WIS speaker before that time.

“Basically what I’m trying to say is, Khai, How badly do you want it? (What is the price you are willing to pay to reach your goals)?

(Vince also told me…) “In life, people only look at two things – friendship or reality. If people are not friends, most would look at reality instead (in other words, they won’t give a damn about you unless it is feasible to them).”

Inspiration: Are you willing to pay the price to reach your goals? Always be loyal and stick by your friends! (and don’t be calculative as far as money is concerned).

Number 2

Name: Sen Ze

Internet marketing role: Business In Pajamas Coach and Internet marketing pioneer

Flagship Product: SOLOBIS

Blog: http://senze.com/business-blog

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

Professor Xavier – has the power to manipulate and read minds, also a powerful visionary!

How I met Sen Ze:

In person at one of his headquarters.

What I admire about Sen Ze:

Sen Ze was my earliest mentor when I knew ZILCH about Internet marketing. When I started my Internet marketing education, I was so broke that I had to borrow $35 (RM100) from my girlfriend (now wife) to purchase his book.

I considered myself a slow learner, but as I was reading Sen Ze’s physical books, it gave me hope that there is a business out there that doesn’t require much capital investment (unlike some network marketing companies) and I don’t have to recruit anyone.

Sen Ze’s books was the beginning of the rest of my Internet marketing life and as I read those books again, it still gives me that nostalgic experiences.

However, when I met Sen Ze in person (and became his apprentice) was I truly ready to appreciate his genius.

From The day that I met him in person till now was when my Internet marketing business started to grow leaps and bounds.

If you are an employee, having Sen Ze as your boss is indeed a privilege and I can see personally how much his employees and partners respect him and his leadership.

Sen Ze is not only a good ‘boss’, he is a wonderful mentor. Unlike other ‘bosses’ he would really lead and guide you ‘hold-your-hand’ style. If you didn’t understand a concept, he would spend HOURS explaining concepts to you step-by-step.

Sen Ze is also a good friend. He doesn’t treat me like a ‘lackey’ or an ‘inferior marketer’. He would listen to your opinions and learn from you as well (treating you like an equal in other words).

We even had many good laughs about his ‘mind reading abilities’ and his ‘blindfold driving stunts’. It is really a pleasure to be acquainted with him.

Most memorable conversation:

(Sen Ze gave me a testimonial for one of the projects I was working with him) I said, “It is such a great honor to receive a testimonial by a famous Tier-1 marketer”

To which he replied, “Don’t say that… anything to help out a friend :)”

(He also gave me a great advice) “You are a leader! Always keep your head up and take pride in what you do best and you will be famous one day. After all, in a few weeks time, the world is going to know who you are and you will tell yourself, “Hey, I’m… – Khai””

Inspiration: No matter how great your achievements, always be down to earth and treat everyone as your equals. And also if you don’t look up to yourself and take pride in what value we can bring to society, you will never inspire others and you can’t expect them to look up to you.

Number 1

Name: Edmund Loh

Internet marketing role: Private Label Rights Extraordinaire!

Flagship Product: Resell Rights Mastery & Private Label Rights Gold

Blog: http://edmundloh.name

Reminds Me Of Which Superhero:

Wolverine – a loner with a troubled past – feisty and aggressive, yet strong, hardworking and fiercely loyal to his friends.

How I met Edmund:

A&W Restaurant (yep… the same building even – why do we keep hanging around here?)

What I admire about Edmund:

No special prizes for those who guessed correctly if Edmund would appear as the champion of Khai’s hall of fame.

So, what nice things can I say about Edmund that hasn’t already been said?

Edmund was the first Internet marketer I have ever met and I think my chances of being an Internet marketer would be next to zero had I not met this feisty individual.

Do not let Edmund’s rough and aggressive exterior fool you even if he may bark at those who piss him off, insult you from time to time (in a joking, friendly sort of way) and appear like a SUPER SERIOUS GUY (I think serious is sometimes an understatement).

I have worked with Edmund on many projects and I can testify that he takes his work very, very seriously and extremely professional (which is a good thing but make sure you do exactly what he says or he will bite… Hehe).

Sometimes, you must have a lot of humility when you work with Edmund because he is extremely results oriented considering that he isn’t even 21 years old yet and he has high expectations towards work related issues… and he carries himself very responsibly as well (more responsible than some guys twice his age!)

Yep – Edmund is a super serious guy, alright… (Did I mention that he is very serious?)

Yet at the end of the day, I can only say one thing about Edmund.

He is FIERCELY LOYAL to his friends and his loved ones.

He would be the guy who would jump into a river filled with crocodiles with his clothes on and get all wet, risking his life to save a friend from drowning (right, Edmund?)

And that’s why I say, don’t look at this guy based on what you see on the surface – he’s all heart and you can never find a better friend than Edmund.

Not only is he generous with what he shares, he will go all out and help you to make sure you succeed.

Every single accomplishment that I’ve done, Edmund was instrumental in building the bridge. If I were to fail at Internet marketing, it would be a dishonor to Edmund and I shiver to think what he would do to me if he found out!

I just want to mention one thing about his past… Edmund came from a broken family. He lacked the leadership and support of a father figure early in his life and had to single-handedly support his family at a very young age.

Most teenagers, if they were plunged into this scenario, would either

  • Roll over and die (in other words, grow up to become a useless bum who hates life or mixes with the wrong crowd)
  • Or like Edmund – push forward because it is the ONLY way to go.

Edmund has conquered every single hardship – everything unimaginable or too scary for any teenager or young adult to handle at their age.

If this doesn’t inspire you, then I don’t know what will…

Most memorable conversation:

“Edmund, you’ll be going back to JB (Edmund’s Home town) soon?”

“Yeah, Khai, but don’t worry… I won’t leave this town for good until I have you up and running (Khai’s business).”

Inspiration:

If Edmund can live through the fire of hell and come out on top, then we must stop giving ourselves B.S. and succeed in life.

Thumbs up to everyone and thanks for everything!

You’ve made me what I am today. :)

So… who are your top 10?

(I feel so inspired after writing this post. I hope this post has inspired you enough to leave some comments!)

    Cool! Cool!

I love this hall of fame. Khai, you’re so creative as you can relate every marketer to each different movie’s character. *Respect* Hehe…

I’m gonna write something about this hall of fame in my blog and I’m so glad that I’m in your list.. :)

Funny you should identify me with Wolverine, though.

    Hey, Dennis!

Well, I’m not sure how accurate the movie characters are, but one thing’s for sure, you don’t have to be a big name marketer or a celebrity to inspire someone else.

    Hey, Edmund!

Why don’t you start the cult of Edmund Loh? Your ‘followers’ will have to give you e-books as a token of sacrifice or as an offering.

What you and Wolverine have in common:
    (1) Very aggressive and always 1st in battle
    (2) Had a difficult past
    (3) Always fend for his friends
    (4) Recover from failure very quickly (healing factor)

What you and Wolverine don’t have in common:
    (1) You are not as old as him
    (2) You don’t have claws…

However, I do hope that in the future, when you leave comments on blogs, please don’t use capitals for all the words. I’ve changed the capitals to the normal format just for your information.

    Hi Monika,

    Thanks for dropping by.

Everyone needs inspiration now and then, don’t you think? After all, Internet marketing isn’t all about conversion and the number of subscribers - there’s the human aspect to it as well that is often neglected.

Maybe one day, I’ll do a blog post about who my favorite writers are and I’ll tell everyone about you ;)
