You Gotta Love Technology…

It’s the 6th day since Chinese New Year. As I’m loitering around my in law’s houses, desperately scrounging around for morsels of Internet connection, I’ve come across this old piece of artifact…
It’s called a 56k Modem.
Back then, when Starbucks never existed in our social radar, there was a time when people actually connected to the Internet using this machine.
It was a time when being connected to the Internet meant that people couldn’t use the phone at the same time.
If Internet marketing existed years ago, (and assuming that I’m staying with an adolescent sibling…) I can imagine myself sending out emails to my subscribers only to be interrupted by my sibling’s constant cries for a free phone line.
That’s why you gotta love technology…
Can you imagine the following if you were using the dinosaur 56k? You would be:
- Unable to login to standard Gmail. You would have to wait for minutes for all the components to load up. Gtalk would work if you are unlucky and you would have to resort to standard HTML to get your email.
- Forget Facebook too… I won’t need to elaborate much here.
- You can’t do many multiple tabs. Whenever I switch on my computer, I would have 10-20 tabs opened at once (emails, blogs, autoresponder, Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs, Wikipedia and many more) in order to get my work done. On a 56k, you running TWO tabs at once is already a luxury.
- Connecting to the Internet takes TIME… and to imagine that we gripe about resetting our modems and waiting about 20 seconds for the connection to load up. However hearing the squeaks and chimes of a connecting 56k modem really brings back nostalgic memories.
- With a 56k, you might even forget to DISCONNECT your connection - often resulting in an exorbitant phone bill if you leave your computer on.
Anyway… having half a connection is better than no connection at all. Otherwise, you would be answering over 100 emails after a week of not logging in.

Unfortunately, dial up modems are still the only way for many people to get connected to the internet (and many marketers forget that in their web page design). People who live in rural areas do not have high speed available, unless they want to pay the high price for a satellite service. Charlie

Brings back loads of fond memories, Trying to make phone calls and forgetting the line tied up, even getting cut off in the middle of a download when someone called. Then theirs waiting for downloads of files which sometimes said 17 hours to download. I love technology too.

I often have to resort to modem when my wireless internet is out of range of the mobile phone network. I find modem dial-up a lot more reliable than the wireless mobile alternative, although wireless broadband is fast when it works. Broadband is available in this area, but I can’t get it because the previous occupants of this rented flat didn’t have the connection removed nor did they pay their bill, so the company (AOL!) have decided to take control of the line until someone pays them. I spent 6 months fighting with the 3 companies involved & had to give up in the end. Anyway, enough waffle!
I agree about a lot of websites not taking into consideration those of us who still do use 56K modems. I have a setting in my browser to disable pictures and scripts. Makes things go a lot faster

If you think that is old, I used to work on a computer that used a cassette recorder for storing data. It took 15 minutes to load a simple program. The good old days
